S7 class wrapping an OGRLayer. A layer belongs to the dataset it came from, and stops working when that dataset is closed.

fid_column and geometry_column are the names those two columns have when the layer is read with read_vector() or arrow_stream(): the names the format declares when it stores them as named columns, and GDAL's own OGC_FID and wkb_geometry when it does not. geometry_column is NA for a layer with no geometry.

field_names lists the attribute fields, not counting those two. ignored_fields is what the driver has been told to skip reading, and is set by assignment: attribute names, and "OGR_GEOMETRY" for the geometry. A skipped field is left out of read_vector() and arrow_stream() altogether, so a driver that reads by column never touches it. character(0) reads everything again. Like a filter, it stays set on the layer.
